Set within the dense urban fabric of Sheung Wan, this 568-square-foot apartment has been reimagined as a one-bedroom retreat for a young professional seeking respite from the pace of city life. Formerly a compact two-bedroom layout, the home has been reconfigured to emphasize clarity, flow, and a sense of quietude.
The transformation centered on dissolving visual barriers, particularly in the kitchen, where solid partitions were removed to enhance natural light and create a more expansive connection between the living and dining areas. A once-narrow corridor was eliminated, shifting the spatial logic toward a more open, fluid environment that supports both work and rest.
Timber panels and shelving in pale finishes lend visual structure without heaviness, and the custom carpentry throughout reflects a meticulous attention to detail. Grooved edges, curved transitions, and millwork all contribute to a sense of quiet refinement.
Spatial efficiency was achieved through subtle but decisive gestures. A sliding door delineates the sleeping quarters, while a dual-sided cabinet partitions living and bedroom areas without enclosing them.

The palette draws from the soft minimalism of Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics, blending warm whites with natural timber to establish a contemplative tone. Pale herringbone wood flooring runs across the public areas, creating visual continuity, while a deep green velvet armchair near the window introduces a point of contrast, echoing the verdant views beyond and inviting moments of stillness.
In response to the density of the surrounding cityscape, adjustable blackout blinds were installed throughout, allowing the home to oscillate between openness and privacy.
The bathroom, designed as a space of retreat in its own right, reflects the client’s appreciation for extended self-care rituals. A custom marble sink becomes the centerpiece—both sculptural and serene—while geometric tension emerges through hexagonal ceramic tiling and precisely detailed counters. Concealed storage preserves the visual stillness of the space, ensuring it remains uncluttered and deeply calming.
